Article Guidelines

Every article in 400 should meet these guidelines :

1. The Article is No More Than 400 Words

That's why 400 is named 400. To help our visitors quickly find the information they are looking for we require that each article be no more that 400 words. To be a 400 writer you need to be direct, short, and to the point.

2. The Article is Not Slanderous

We're all for truth, however, we're not for getting sued. Slander is not permitted. The difference between slander and truth is often the line where things are well known or can be proved conclusively. For example, everyone knows that Jerry Falwell proudly proclaimed one of the Teletubies to be homosexual. Reporting this fact will show his… intellectual difficulties without being slanderous.

3. Use and / or Significance are of First Importance

The actual use and / or significance of the subject of an article should be the first part of the article. For example, there are two ways of describing a hammer.

First, the anal retentive way :

A hammer is a tool about a foot or more long, made of metal, sometimes including a wooden hammer.

Our way :

A hammer is a tool used to pound something.

4. The article's subject should be bold

If the page's subject is "hammer", as in the above line, then the first appearance of the word "hammer" should be in bold.

A hammer is a tool used to pound something.

5. Links should appear only once.

Terms should only be linked once, of the first appearance of the term — not every time the term or page name appears in an article.
